it was great to be able to watch the majority of the swim before it was our turn to jump off the pontoon into the river. it definitely was not cold but it was very murky and having witnessed one of the lead swimmers exit the river and have to abandon the race due to vomiting didn’t help my confidence. the swim was 850m against the flow and then return with the flow followed by a steep run up some steps to transition. all went well on the swim with no real drama and i did really focus on trying to ensure i did not take on water and focussed totally on trying to take the most efficient racing line as possible – we had all initially discussed and decided the strategy was to stay closer to the bank against the river and then take the middle on the return, this went totally out the window once in the water and i certainly didn’t manage to take in the scenery around the river bank – unlike dave discussing the beautiful houses backing onto the river and sarah and pete talking about the rhinos which were somewhere along the river! with a fair transition i was out onto the bike. the bike was one big flat loop – well flat compared to pembrokeshire anyway. i felt i had a good bike, being aero most of the way and overtaking quite a few i was soon back into transition and thinking things were going fairly well. then the run – having not run for most of 2017 due to a painful heel (plantar fasciitis) i knew this was definitely going to be my achilles heel! as i had been in the last wave for the swim it was now mid day and it was hot – very hot. the run was 3 loops in a figure of eight going over 2 bridges and there was a lot of people out on the same run course with the combination of the two distances. i set off quite well on the initial run loop and overtook a number of ladies who looked to be in my age category but by the second loop although still running (there were a lot of people walking) i felt i was fading fast and thinking why on earth have i entered the cotswold middle distance in august – i may have to seriously reconsider this. i can honestly say i was relieved to go over the last bridge for the final loop and into the finish straight. it was great to see everyone from the club waiting for me – all looking fully recovered from their race having been home for what appeared to be hours i am sure. sarah’s relay team did really well, so much so that caroline who did the run has been inspired to join chester tri club. jay and pete did fantastically and dave had an exceptional race coming 5th in his category and qualifying for the world championships in age 45-49 in the gold coast and also age 50 in switzerland in 2019. i was happy with my race coming second in f60-64 category and hopefully achieved my goal to qualify for the world championship in switzerland next year, awaiting confirmation. oh and we solved the mystery of the missing gel shots – they were in petes bike shoe and this only came to light once he had completed his running mount and got his feet in his shoes which were clipped on his bike – it was a very squishy bike ride. but the chester triathlon story does not end there! the post race evening went really well as we all stayed up the night after the race, however on the journey home the next day we had problems with the car which resulted in us spending nearly 5 hours in a garage on the road between aberystwyth and aberaeron waiting for the car to be put on the back of a recovery lorry and with pete developing sickness and diarrhea! a memorable weekend. ... see more see less view on facebook · share view on facebook membership the pembrokeshire triathlon club training sessions are open to everyone and the first session is free. to take part in further training sessions and to take advantage of all of the other benefits of being part of the club you will need to become a member. to find out more about becoming a member click the link below. join us today! upcoming events mike's bikes pembrokeshire coast triathlon day(s) : hour(s) : minute(s) : second(s) pembrokeshire half marathon & 10k day(s) : hour(s) : minute(s) : second(s) pembrokeshire duathlon day(s) : hour(s) : minute(s) : second(s) strava tide ti
